A Lasting Legacy

One of the easiest ways to leave a lasting legacy to your church after you die is to make a simple bequest or legacy in your will.

Do you know what happens to your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), or Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) when you pass away?

Without planning ahead, UP TO HALF OF YOUR ASSETS COULD GO TO INCOME TAX!  Using a direct designation strategy, you can make a charitable gift of your RRSP or RRIF to Clinton United Church and the full amount goes directly to the Clinton United Church and your estate receives tax credits.Your family still inherits approximately the same amount, and the part of your estate that would have gone to Income Tax goes to your church instead.  A win/win for your estate and your church.

Legacies from church members can make a huge difference in the success of any church. With your help Clinton United Church can continue to survive long after we are gone. All over Canada, churches are closing their doors, as their membership dwindles. Last year alone there was something like one United Church per week closing its doors across Canada. Often times these churches are amalgamating hoping to grow stronger, much like we have done here at Clinton United. It seems to be a sign of the times that people don’t think they need to support their church on a regular basis and they just take for granted that it will be there for them when they need it. In fact, churches need continued sustenance the same way we all do. The building itself needs to be maintained to be in compliance with safety standards and to provide a warm and welcoming environment for the congregation and the community in which we live.

A good way you can help to provide for day-to-day expenses is by signing up for PAR. PAR is a Pre-authorized Remittance program that you can easily set up with our church secretary/treasurer Marilyn Seebach. You only need to provide a blank cheque from your chequing account. Mark “VOID” on the cheque and tell Marilyn the amount that you would like to have debited every month. You can also specify how your donations will be used, the same way that you would normally do when you complete your weekly giving envelopes. It is as simple as that and you only have to do it once! If you change your mind, you can increase, or decrease, the amount you wish to have automatically debited at any time. You are not locked in either, because you can stop PAR at any time, so no worries. PAR givings, that the church can count on, allow your church to plan the ongoing day-to-day finances of the church. It also lightens the load and lessens the worry about how the bills are going to get paid during July and August when attendance is often down, or when unforeseen expenses crop up, as they often do.
